Security Requirements at Luton Airport

Hand Luggage Requirements

  • One piece of hand luggage per customer (laptop's count as one piece of hand luggage).
  • Hand Luggage must fit within the following measurements (56cm long x 45 centmetre high x 25 centimetres deep.
  • All items exceeding this size must be checked in.
  • Musical Instruments are allowed as a second item of hand luggage.
  • Puschairs, Wheelchairs and walking aids are permitted (they will be screened).

Hand luggage restrictions on liquids

  • Liquids must be carried in a clear plastic bag.
  • The bag must be no greater in size than 20cm x 18cm.
  • The bag must be sealed and presented seprately at X-ray.
  • Only one bag of liquids per passenger is permitted.
  • Liquids must be carried within separate containers and the containers must not exceed a capacity of 100ml.
  • Any liquids that do not meet these restrictions must be checked in.

Note: - the Luton Airport Security definition of 'Liquids' encompasses - all drinks, soups, syrups, creams, lotions, perfumes, sprays, shaving foams, lotions, toothpastes, hair gels, shower gels, creams and anything of a similar consistency.

Bags are available in vending machines at Luton Airport.

Items not allowed in Hand Luggage

  • Guns, Firearms and Weapons.
  • Flare pistols and starter pistols.
  • Air Pistols, Rifles, Pellet Guns, Toy Guns, Ball Bearing Guns.
  • Industrial Bolt an Nail Guns
  • Cross Bows and Catapults.
  • Stun or shocking devices.
  • Harpoon or Spear Guns.
  • Animal Humane Killers.
  • Any gun-shaped novelties (lighters etc).

  • Sharp objects, pointed/edged weapons.
  • Axes, Hatches, Knives, Lock Knives, Meat Cleavers, Machetes, Sabres, Swords and Swordsticks.
  • Arrows, Darts, Spears, Harpoons, Open Razors, Scalpels, Scissors.
  • Crampons, Ice Axes, Ice Picks, Ice Skates, Ski and Walking/Hiking Poles.
  • Household Cutlery, Corkscrews, Knitting Needles, Tweezers.
  • Any sharp or pointed tools - screwdrivers, saws, crowbars, hammers, wrenches, spanners.

  • Blunt instruments that could potentially cause injury.
  • Baseball/Softball/Cricket Bats.
  • Golf Clubs, Lacrosse Sticks, Hockey Sticks.
  • Snooker/Billiard/Pool Cues.
  • Canoe/Kayak paddles.
  • Fishing Rods, Skate Boards.
  • Any Martial Arts Weapons.

  • Explosives and Flammable substances
  • Ammunition, Detonators, Explosives, Mines, Grenades, Fireworks.
  • Gas Containers, Turpentine, Paint Thinner, Petrol, Gas, Aerosol Spray Paint, Lighter Fluid.
  • Alcoholic Beverages exceeding 140% proof.
  • Smoke Cannisters, Non-safety matches.

  • Toxic and Chemical substances that could cause harm
  • Acids and Alkalis.
  • Mace, Tear Gas, Pepper Spray.
  • Poisons.
  • Infected Bloo, Bacteria, Viruses.
  • Fire Extinguishers.
  • Corrosive or Bleaching substances.

Items allowed in Hand Luggage

  • Medically required items
  • Medicines in pressurise containers (each container not exceeding half a litre).
  • Medicines in excess of the 100ml liquid limit.
  • All items/liquids carried due to medical requirements will need the associated proof of requirement issued by your Doctor

  • Items needed when travelling with babies or small children.
  • Milk exceeding 100ml.
  • Baby Food.
  • Nappies and Wet Wipes.
  • Lotions and Gels (these must adhere to the 100ml liquid rules - see above).
  • Push Chairs and Buggies (these will still need to go the the X-Ray machine).
  • Note: All milks and baby food will need to be tasted to prove authenticity.

  • Any Duty Free Purchases
  • Perfumes, Spirits, Wines, Tobacco.
  • Hairsprays and Deodorants.
  • Toiletries, Perfumes, Aftershaves.

Items not permitted on an Aircraft at all

  • Oxidizers or Organic Peroxides.
  • Tear Gas or any Gas Cylinders.
  • Wet Cell Car Batteries.
  • Live Virus Materials or infected blood
  • Fireworks, Flammable Liquids and Solids, Non-safety matches.
  • Instruments containing Mercury or Magnets.
  • Poisons, Weed Killer, Cyanide, Arsenic.
  • Acids or Alkalis, Corrisive Materials
  • Radioactive Materials.
  • Creosote, Oiled Paper, Quicklime.
